Sonja Appel is the founder and leading teacher of Sushumna Yoga shala, who has a prominent teaching and studying experience in yoga and pilates and she places great value on keeping up with her self-practice as well. She has developed her own signature flow, known as the Sushumna Vinyasa Flow, which derives from Ashtanga. This flow focuses on opening up energy channels, allowing energy to move through the chakras, thus enabling the practitioner to tap into his/her utmost potential. Sonja studied ashtanga with the great Shri K Patthabi Jois and is happy to spread her wisdom around with his blessing. She describes herself as follows: "I believe in a holistic approach to the study of yoga, giving my students a well-rounded yoga education. I combine alignment techniques of the body, with breath techniques for calming and balancing the mind. Focus and visualization, to balance body and brain. Chanting and music for inspiration and concentration and also Meditation, (the ultimate reason for the practice of asana). I also believe that it is not progression through the 6 series' of Ashtanga that defines Wholeness, but rather a wider focus on all the limbs."
